AKRON -- Today, Senator Vernon Sykes, who represents SD 28 and the city of Akron, and Senate Minority Leader Kenny Yuko issued the following statements in response to President Donald Trump's tweet urging Americans to stop buying Goodyear products.
Goodyear is headquartered in Akron, Ohio. They employ thousands of Ohioans and tens of thousands of Americans nationwide.
Senator Vernon Sykes (D-Akron):
"President Trump should be a cheerleader and an advocate for our community's interests. Instead, it seems his number one objective is promoting his own interests at the expense of workers in Summit County.
"Donald Trump is not pro business. He's pro Trump. He's throwing American workers and businesses under the bus to soothe his own ego."
Senate Minority Leader Kenny Yuko:
"I worked as a clothing buyer at Polsky's in Akron. We did a lot of business with Ohio's rubber industry. Those are good, honest people. They deserve better than a president who tells Americans not to buy Akron-made tires because his feelings were hurt.
"I want Ohio to succeed. President Trump should too. Instead he's undermining hardworking Ohioans and their families by telling people not to buy their product. I'm appalled."
